Alternative Research Forum 2020
The organisers of the 9th Alternative Research Forum are Miriam de Rosa (Independent Curator/Researcher, Milan) and Greg de Cuir Jr (Selector, Alternative Film Video, Belgrade). The topic for this year’s Research Forum is Desktop Cinema. By that is meant those audiovisual pieces often labeled as “desktop documentaries”, and any other works alluding explicitly to or replicating the digital interface which has been employed to technically create the work itself. Experimenting and hinting at what Harun Farocki called “operational images”, the kind of audiovisual works in focus for this Research Forum combine technical and aesthetic elements in a mix that interrogates the desktop environment as well as its most commonly used apps and software.
Participants include: Chloé Galibert-Laîné (Artist/Researcher, Ecole normale supérieure de Paris), Michael Streicher Metzger (Curator, Block Museum, Chicago), Kevin B. Lee (Artist/Lecturer, Merz Akademie, Stuttgart), Julie Yunhee Moon (Artist/Curator, New York City), Jiří Anger (Researcher/Curator, Czech National Film Archive, Prague), Yvette Granata (Artist/Assistant Professor, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), Sunei Sanzgiri (Artist, New York City), Kirsten Adkins (Artist/Researcher, BCU/University of Wolverhampton), Shane Denson (Associate Professor, Stanford University).
The 1st Alternative Research Forum was held in 2012. To date two Research Forum anthologies have been published, On Fragmentation (2014) and Video Art / New Media Art (2019), both edited by Greg de Cuir Jr. The Alternative Research Forum is a one-day event which gathers a group of curators, artists, writers, and researchers for a fluid encounter where presentations are delivered and discussions held concerning works of film, video, new media art and the cultures that inform them.
The founding curator of the Alternative Research Forum is Greg de Cuir Jr
